Avioxx and SolydEra Achieve Breakthrough in Waste-to-Power for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Runcorn, UK and Pergine Valsugana, ITALY – April 28th, 2025

Avioxx, the UK-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) innovation company, and SolydEra, a key player in solid oxide technology based in northern Italy, have successfully demonstrated electricity generation with a bespoke SOFC system, using simulated, waste-derived syngas as a feedstock.

Using waste-derived syngas for electricity generation represents a novel application of SOFC technology. It opens the door to dramatic efficiencies when integrated into Avioxx’s SAF production process. Syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, is produced from household waste and is used in the patented Avioxx process to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The integration of SOFCs into the process is a major innovation in sustainable fuel technology. The demonstration took place at Avioxx’s Advanced Fuels Facility in Runcorn, UK, where a pilot SOFC unit has been operating periodically since February 2025.

“This is a real breakthrough at the core of the Avioxx system,” said Chris Hancock, CEO of Avioxx. “By generating electricity within the SAF process using gas made from waste, we remove the need to purchase external electricity and believe we can make sustainable fuel cost-competitive with fossil when operating at scale. There’s enough waste in the UK alone to support the production of half of the country’s jet fuel needs, and we’ve just proven the energy potential in that waste.”

The Avioxx programme will see the two companies working together to design a full-scale, integrated SOFC module for commercial deployment in Avioxx’s future SAF refineries.

CEO of SolydEra, Dr. Alexander Liberov, commented: “As core technology provider of solid oxide technology, we are proud to work with Avioxx to demonstrate how our solutions can directly convert syngas into clean electricity with very high efficiency. This breakthrough doesn’t just power a process; it solves a waste disposal challenge. With the volume of non-recyclable waste in the UK alone, there’s potential to meet up to 50% of the country’s aviation fuel demand. This is circular energy in action.”

Avioxx’s first large-scale production facility is planned to begin construction in 2026, enabling a greener future for the aviation industry.
